I couldn't bear the thought of someone else getting to love him for the rest of his life. Somewhere in my heart I always knew he was mine. And I honestly think he knew it too. When I got the email congratulating me on becoming his forever mom, I looked over at him and I swear to you he was smiling at me, "I know I'm yours mom, forever and ever." I cried so hard into his little speckled neck that day. Definitely one of the happiest moments of my life. <br />
<br />
I've been through a lot this past year or so and sometimes I don't think I would've made it if it wasn't for the unconditional love of my creatures. They make me want to make it and to make something better out of myself. I'm getting there.<br />

I wanted to do something for this breed that I've fallen so in love with. (I hate to say it but I might actually be more of a frenchie person than a pug person now!) I picked up my first foster Mack around Easter and have spent the last few months working on his behavioral rehabilitation as well as a few health issues. <br />
<br />
Well I've done it, I went and fell completely head over heels for my first foster... I mean, I anticipated that fostering would be rewarding but I never dreamed that I would grow so attached. The time has come to put Mack up for adoption and I have received several applications that I know would make wonderful homes for him. So far I've been quite picky. I know it probably sounds ridiculous, but how can anyone possibly love him as much as I do?<br />
<br />
I know you must be thinking, Well duh, why don't YOU just adopt him then?? He suffers from separation anxiety and was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Given the recent turn of events in my life (calling off my wedding, breaking things off with the fiance, etc...) I don't feel I can give this boy the home that he needs. And it breaks my heart! <br />
<br />
Just look at that face...<br />

I know I've been gone for oh half a year or so but I'm going to try and be back now. It has been a whirlwind of a year so far. My fiance's dad passed, I have wedding plans coming out my rear, we recently took in a foster pup, and the house projects never seem to end!<br />
<br />
So here's a little picture update on my year so far...<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In dealing with multiple pet deaths, a miscarriage, and now my father-in-law's death I have been through the journey of grief more than I care to over the past year. It is a tricky thing, grief. There is no right or wrong way to deal with death. There are certainly actions and reactions to death that society has deemed permissible and still others that it has deemed preferential. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">With the pet deaths and miscarriage I felt very much on my own in dealing with my grief. There are not a lot of resources out there regarding these topics. Among other things, I turned to music.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I compiled a list of songs that I dubbed my "Mourning Mix". I thought I'd share it with you. I hope it brings you as much peace as it did me.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

My fiance's dad passed away suddenly yesterday morning. He was a great man and we already miss him. Life will never be the same.shabbycottagegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13685652523879010920noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8159810093323068594.post-35091935996251810002011-01-02T11:59:00.001-06:002011-01-02T12:01:22.305-06:00These are a Few of My Favorite ThingsI developed some new loves (or as the fiance likes to call them <em>obsessions</em>) in 2010. I fully expect them to follow me into 2011. Here's a list of my top five...<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
1. Harry Potter. The books. The movies. The characters. I love it all. I am currently on the fourth book and I just can't get enough of it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmFhxWksSmxNHlqjpksjNDw_5vVilZaj2aFG2eaUNET1ZBDRjeFrkv1xTOqpqbUCrQJ0T-6xDnbTTLtwBjaachXofVK4jaRnB9q8BiTP21jcI-HNKxp-3i9fyjhR-f_iw8MT3EsBFuKGc6/s1600/harry-potter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmFhxWksSmxNHlqjpksjNDw_5vVilZaj2aFG2eaUNET1ZBDRjeFrkv1xTOqpqbUCrQJ0T-6xDnbTTLtwBjaachXofVK4jaRnB9q8BiTP21jcI-HNKxp-3i9fyjhR-f_iw8MT3EsBFuKGc6/s400/harry-potter.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em><span style="font-size: x-small;">(Image courtesy of czechfolks.com)</span></em></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">2. Glee. Yes somewhere along the way last year I fell in love with the hilariously entertaining lives of the McKinley High Glee Club's misfits. I'm a <strike>dork</strike> Gleek.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCvhaEsi-tXPSRQ_552RFNicjIk-Mcw80roeeRyo4juFc6n9UguPiY8Dfc80KpEq0EJLM3zXsXXzCHQnlhu_tuRcPRFkSQR2qi6z3wXGTHml1bO-I1QRc8BwFYGSYH1c8_xXth4qIcocET/s1600/glee-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCvhaEsi-tXPSRQ_552RFNicjIk-Mcw80roeeRyo4juFc6n9UguPiY8Dfc80KpEq0EJLM3zXsXXzCHQnlhu_tuRcPRFkSQR2qi6z3wXGTHml1bO-I1QRc8BwFYGSYH1c8_xXth4qIcocET/s400/glee-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"> <em>(Image courtsey of pinartarhan.com)</em></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">5. Junking. I have always been a pretty serious thrifter. Then I discovered junking. And it's pretty much the coolest hobby ever. Here are my top five...<br />
<br />
1. (This one's pretty obvious :) ) Get in shape for my wedding in September.<br />
<br />
2. Finish one room every month (or two).<br />
<br />
3. Volunteer more.<br />
<br />
4. Pay off at least two credit cards.<br />
<br />
5. Start a new Project 365 and post one picture every day for a year. (Check out the new and improved Project 365 tab at the top!)shabbycottagegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13685652523879010920noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8159810093323068594.post-37100211780102221012010-12-26T21:06:00.000-06:002010-12-26T21:06:01.762-06:00Very Merry Christmas to You!Hello all! I'm sorry it's been so long... As I'm sure most of you can relate, I have been very busy these past couple of months. So here's a little peak at what I was working on...<br />
<br />
My mom commissioned me to make Christmas gifts for all of her board members at work. And as I have mentioned before, I love love love chalkboard paint! So I thought I would make everyone a chalkboard vase. I'm also new to sewing so I sewed a little pouch to hold the handmade felt eraser, two pieces of chalk, and instructions on how to care for the vase.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtktE84ReQh4GyY8erNT78q_M6whnzbwH2V8zhWcdZEhOGa81oc7NuvgA7Gd5qAozbTG4tI5wJ9pUyzIU0FUtPXOgx3AiBqyAeilXmYSfBit9uiIBZmW2C0YL09QpYBhb2PoPEgg0YfBdf/s1600/DSC04611.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtktE84ReQh4GyY8erNT78q_M6whnzbwH2V8zhWcdZEhOGa81oc7NuvgA7Gd5qAozbTG4tI5wJ9pUyzIU0FUtPXOgx3AiBqyAeilXmYSfBit9uiIBZmW2C0YL09QpYBhb2PoPEgg0YfBdf/s400/DSC04611.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I sewed the 5X3 inch <span style="background-color: white;">pouch from </span>some material that is both festive and good for year-round display. I cut some Velcro to size and glued it on the inside of the pouch so it would stay closed. I then glued a button on the front. I then cut a 3X3 inch square out of black felt and glued a ribbon and buttons in the center that serve as the handle. I printed "care" instructions from the computer and glued them onto a file folder (you know those whitish ones?). I used a crinkle patterned scissors to cut the instructions out and a hole punch to punch a single hole through all three pieces. I then used a small piece of hemp string to tie them all together. I folded the eraser in half and stuffed it, the chalk, and the instructions into the pouch.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The vases were all purchased from the thrift store. (If you're trying this at home make sure to use smooth surfaced vases to ensure a smooth writing surface for the chalk.) I used a can of spray chalkboard paint and painted all the vases at once. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Final product...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrGaDeMI0vUW5UFTQp7nEc5VTSfbLAnac2D5D69d1zcbnr2SB6KsM71aV4Gz3XdH4j_qZvvLT7zlftC4n5k3Ekciojp0LUQhQIJnCzPug68LtgXbVq4QjMSxs97kF0P67qBJQhdAq_kPKh/s1600/DSC04616.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrGaDeMI0vUW5UFTQp7nEc5VTSfbLAnac2D5D69d1zcbnr2SB6KsM71aV4Gz3XdH4j_qZvvLT7zlftC4n5k3Ekciojp0LUQhQIJnCzPug68LtgXbVq4QjMSxs97kF0P67qBJQhdAq_kPKh/s400/DSC04616.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas!<br />

I should have done this last week...<br />
<br />
I'd like to wish a very happy birthday to The Pug. He turned a whopping six! My how the years fly by... He was a gift from the fiance (then boyfriend) for Christmas/birthday (they may or may not be on the same day :) ). <br />
<br />
So we celebrated like every freak dog parent does and threw him a birthday party. Yes there were presents. And yes there was a <a href="http://www.frostypawstreats.com/FrostyPaws/">Frosty Paws</a> for each of the doggie guests. AND yes there was cake for the human guests. AND YES we stuck a candle in his Frosty Paws and sang him happy birthday!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZjR6z7WMZSbqB7u3jKVioMpD4oxNsqO5TPy8rlk6N45hAaYeyup-JVLKJEs3uxmU8zBndIHXIizUtmFLeBK6EfVJflTgAwsMlpsjj7BYAgQ6jmdDi8hJ5FYjotYD4KmOKGf7FoFltWXzx/s1600/aDSC041861.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" nx="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZjR6z7WMZSbqB7u3jKVioMpD4oxNsqO5TPy8rlk6N45hAaYeyup-JVLKJEs3uxmU8zBndIHXIizUtmFLeBK6EfVJflTgAwsMlpsjj7BYAgQ6jmdDi8hJ5FYjotYD4KmOKGf7FoFltWXzx/s400/aDSC041861.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I know what you're thinking cuz I hear it all the time... "Face only a mother could love." </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Maybe, but I love him just the same.</div><div align="center"></div>shabbycottagegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13685652523879010920noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8159810093323068594.post-57788651889767686082010-10-15T20:33:00.001-05:002010-10-15T20:57:40.078-05:00Desk UpdateTI finally finished the desk I've been working on forEVER! I had attempted my first ever antique finish on the small hutch piece that sits on top of the desk. It turned out better than I expected but my widescreen laptop doesn't fit on the desk so I have to leave it off for now. :( <br />
<br />
I had also done a small microwave/kitchen cart thing in the antique finish. I didn't want the desk to be matchy matchy with the desk soooooooo I decided to try my hand at stenciling.<br />
<br />
I googled flower clip art online and came up with this design:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-JM_ATMOxwfD18lGl9dx8DCJfEvJVZX-3m2EYeAhJ8icMbxjYYRGNN2Ey-0lNI89xJLepJlYr0ThQ-qIFei7WRHPEnJq_k4JnvXgdgtwkYEWMbWpjuFAUMYvSamzCuw7pvD14K0Jmkis0/s1600/DSC04217.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-JM_ATMOxwfD18lGl9dx8DCJfEvJVZX-3m2EYeAhJ8icMbxjYYRGNN2Ey-0lNI89xJLepJlYr0ThQ-qIFei7WRHPEnJq_k4JnvXgdgtwkYEWMbWpjuFAUMYvSamzCuw7pvD14K0Jmkis0/s400/DSC04217.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I don't have a new printer at home yet so I printed it out at work. I had to tape the printout onto a piece of cardstock to cut it out. It would have been better if I could have printed it onto the cardstock because it got a little messy but I made it work.</div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRIQlVM6uMaZCZWdcg-fwc1bzLn4xdWJCOEtBE1b_FCrmc-7OqanXa_-oVaoSiV3ibldTqvIjCb8jOHPpqu6HDC0EvVSvVLrxh-nyr_g2vCbNKv1o9owy5RdJW_IGynMslaP95IYqNkO7-/s1600/DSC04215.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRIQlVM6uMaZCZWdcg-fwc1bzLn4xdWJCOEtBE1b_FCrmc-7OqanXa_-oVaoSiV3ibldTqvIjCb8jOHPpqu6HDC0EvVSvVLrxh-nyr_g2vCbNKv1o9owy5RdJW_IGynMslaP95IYqNkO7-/s400/DSC04215.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge6ZwZx3ta5lQhVKwaE1FXwgVc4WiieH3AtBH0rGGGp4nF8bxUeoeNNkeoXif_uxe95pthPzk2Hm1_ACjDx97gNw-QDLUR3SWjtm0MP9moIxkF9EnyrbsCWNFw0A8lgtuu5NfY-HZyo3E7/s1600/DSC04221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge6ZwZx3ta5lQhVKwaE1FXwgVc4WiieH3AtBH0rGGGp4nF8bxUeoeNNkeoXif_uxe95pthPzk2Hm1_ACjDx97gNw-QDLUR3SWjtm0MP9moIxkF9EnyrbsCWNFw0A8lgtuu5NfY-HZyo3E7/s400/DSC04221.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
I then taped it to my desk and using some of the gel stain that I used on the other pieces, I sponged the stencil.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWyfFRhMsF8ELBzQIWUwokD0M8K9Ye8IuPdbvT__YAefexmwGAP2izo5vbqP2UzPYRyoIoVIIZGGvELxViyMD_C1dZuAXt1NNznAMyraH9vxgLwXb8lsL6ahRnvY644fGZsbQpbmx6EySN/s400/DSC04238.JPG" width="266" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I think this picture doesn't do it justice. It's really quite adorable in person I promise. :) It will look even better when this room is all set up.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

(This is entirely predictable of me as my "errands" typically include: bank, gas station, library, and -drum roll please- the thrift store!) I must say I made quite a haul today.<br />

I can't believe I won!<br />
<br />
Secondly I wanted to post a preview of one of the MANY projects I'm tackling right now...<br />
<br />
This past summer I had my first ever garage sale and took donations of furniture, clothes, and tons of other stuff from family and friends to sell. (Proceeds went to the wedding fund :) ) This desk was one of the things that didn't sell and it was only marked for $5. What a steal! So I decided to hang on to it afterward instead of donating it.<br />
<br />
I saw so much potential! First and foremost, there's one thing you must know about me. If it's wood or anything fake wood, I will paint it white. (I tried to convince the fiance to let me paint the wood floors white instead of having them refinished but he wouldn't listen... "but think of all the money we'd save! And it would look so clean and fresh!" but he was not sold on the idea. Insert pout here.)<br />
<br />
So naturally when I decided to take this little beauty into my home I had to start by painting it white. (I have a gallon of Dutch Boy's Timeless Ivory so almost everything I paint right now is that color! :) )<br />
<br />
The second thing you should know about me is that the moment I discovered chalkboard paint I knew my life was finally complete. Sooooo..... I thought, "Wouldn't this desk be stellar with a chalkboard top?!" <br />
<br />
So I took my Timeless Ivory desk and spray painted the top of it with chalkboard paint. But it looked so B-L-A-H. So I thought I'd try my hand at an antique finish. I gotta say, it's still in it's final stages but it turned out pretty neat...<br />

He's been sick for some time now and my heart couldn't bear to watch him suffer any longer. It was one of the most difficult moments of my life. He's been my dog for over 15 years. He watched me grow up and he was the last living tie to a lot of things from my childhood.: my grandpa, my other childhood pets, and almost every trial and tribulation I've been through in the past decade and a half. I know it was the right thing to do and I am at peace with my decision. I hope Doggie Heaven is all it's cracked up to be and more.<br />
<br />
So rest in peace my boy. I will forever hold you and our memories close to my heart. <br />

So here's some pics of from our day...<br />

Every Tuesday night throughout the summer my quaint little lake community hosts a farmer's market in the park by the beach. <br />
It was awesome.<br />
<br />
Vendors were selling fresh vegetables, plants, fresh baked bread, handmade jewelry and clothing, home-made salsa, crafts, and a bunch of other fun things for sale. There was even an obnoxious band whose lyrics included "my wife is my grandma". (What?!) Apparently they missed the "family event" part? Ish.<br />

As I've mentioned before, I'm a bit detailed (my fiance would say neurotic) about my gift wrapping and presentation. I had a glass jar w/lid with some Fleur de Lis etched on it that my mom didn't want anymore, and that the mom-in-law mentioned she really liked. I knew that I wanted to combine these two items but I wasn't sure how...</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Until one day I was re-reading my Flea Market Syle magazine and saw a great idea in which one of the featured crafty women took old books and shredded them with a shredder. She then took the shredded paper and used it to pack her gifts. Brilliant!</div>So I thought I'd try it.<br />
I had the gift, the thing in which to pack it, and an idea. So I headed to the local thrift store and scored a cheap encyclopedia. <br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Here's the step by step...</div><div align="center" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">We replaced all of the old (I'm pretty sure original) windows from our 1900's home last year. They are currently collecting dust in the garage (the fiance's <em>mancave</em> if you will). He and my dad keep insisting that we throw them out. "Haul them to the dump, that's what you should do!" But I can't stand the thought of these beautiful pieces of history rotting away unwanted and unloved with the rest of the world's trash. So for the better part of a year they have been sitting there while I try and find them a loving home or figure out a way to love them back to something beautiful myself. </div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">This is where my new creative tool-chalkboard spray paint comes into play. This stuff is A-mazing! You can use it on any smooth surface and it will transform it into a chalkboard! Yes you heard me right, <em>a chalkboard</em>. You can actually write or draw with chalk and then erase it! (I might say something about sliced bread here, but I really hate that cliche.)</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">I think you can see by now where this is going. I have big plans involving my antique windows and chalkboard paint. And maybe a store on etsy sometime soon... </div>shabbycottagegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13685652523879010920noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8159810093323068594.post-3716736709858585772010-05-31T02:39:00.000-05:002010-05-31T02:39:08.025-05:00Garage Sale LessonsIn honor of my new blog idol "Jessica" author of the brilliantly written <a href="http://i-quit.blogspot.com/">"i-quit"</a> I would like to use today's blog entry to compile a list of what I've learned from hosting a garage sale.:<br />
<br />
1. If you find yourself with more than a garden shed's worth of things to sell you will need more than a week to price it all. Even with the help of your mother and attenion-span-of-a-five-year-old fiance (I mostly just used him for his muscle and to bring me food when I was hungry).<br />
<br />
2. Buy the pre-printed price stickers. I did not know of their existence until I had used masking tape and sharpies to price all of my items. I guestimate this lack of knowledge cost me at least two hours.<br />
<br />
3. It is true what they say: one mans trash <em>is</em> another mans treasure (and they will pay more than you would think to own that trash/treasure). Case in point: My fiance had a GT Vertigo bike left over from his childhood days of wannabe trick bike riding (priced at $45-no this is not too much to ask as you will soon see). A rather large man (we're talking 5'8"ish 300lbs), most likely in his early thirties, drove past our house looking over his shoulder out of the rear sliding window of his pickup truck sizing up our goods. He made it all the way to the stop sign (maybe 50 feet from our driveway) before deciding there was something here worth stopping for. He threw his truck in reverse, parked, and he and his friend all but ran up our driveway. I jokingly asked if he was here to buy all of our furniture (which we had a lot of). He meekly shook his head and beelined for the GT. He checked the price sticker, "Hmmm. $45?". Puhlease. The look on your face told me all I needed to know about your struggle to contain your excitement over <em>this</em> discovery. He then proceeded to pull out a hundred dollar bill and asked if I could change it out. (This is when I began my mental kicking-myself-in-the-rear for not putting a higher price on that stupid bike and letting people dicker it down.) Of course I could change out the hundo (don't worry I checked all the security features). At this point I thought this guy was buying it for his kid. Oh no. I handed him his change and he got on the bike and gleefully (yes giddy smile and giggles ensued) pedaled down my driveway to his truck.<br />
<br />
Side note: Later that day some friends stopped by to scope out the loot. As they were driving home they saw this giant man on his new (old) GT trick bike racing along the sidewalks of our city's downtown area.<br />
<br />
Lesson learned: With items such as this do not be afraid to price things a little higher and allow people to negotiate with you. The child trapped in the giant mans body described above would have quite possibly given me that hundred dollar bill for that bike. <br />
<br />
4.Do not consider yourself above stealing the sign stakes of others. Some poor bastard thought that a styrofoam sign would hold its own in the frequent windy moments of our lakeside community. Wrong. That flimsy thing didn't stand a chance. If your sign is too weak to survive for the duration of your sale its just too bad for you. Survival of the fittest. Yes we stole a rather sweet sturdy wooden stake for one of our signs. (It should be noted that we did not bother moving it to a different location, we left it in the exact spot those other people put it in and taped our sign to it. The remnants of their dead sign were laying nearby.) <br />
<br />
5.Sheet sets can be priced high (we're talking $5+ here) if they are strategically folded and taped together so that no rips or stains are visible. Most people are too nice to rip the tape off and unfold your nice pretty fold job. (However, this doesn't seem to apply to clothes.)<br />
<br />
6.Watch the weather carefully and have an emergency plan in place. When the rain starts to fall at an increasingly alarming rate it can be difficult to move heavy pieces of furniture in a timely manner without a previously discussed strategy. Especially if you have five or more of said pieces.<br />
<br />
7.Be ready to meet every neighbor within a six block radius. Especially if you are relatively new to the neighborhood. Don't get me wrong, this is a great opportunity. But remember that first impressions are almost always everything so yes you have to make an effort at your appearance on these garage sale days. Do your makeup, comb your hair, and keep deodorant handy. And ask questions about the neighborhood or the history of your house/previous owners. They love when you show interest like this.<br />
<br />
Bonus observation: If you make this first impression a positive one, they <em>will</em> buy something. A reward for your passing of their new-neighbor test (she takes care of herself, doesn't smell like BO, and shows an interest in our neighborhood I should buy this item for a quarter.) <br />
<br />
8.Think like a salesperson. But if that seemingly poor man walks up (a little stinky, missing teeth, best plumbers crack ever!) do your deed for the day and take a $10 hit on that box of dishes. Chances are if he's turning his pockets inside out and handing you all the money he has on him, it's probably all the money he has <em>at all</em>. And take a minute to have a little convo with him. You're probably the only person that's willingly talked like that with him in a while. The human soul needs other human contact, don't be a dick.<br />
<br />
9.Build rapport. Greet every single person that walks up, and thank every single person for stopping whether they buy something or not. They are more likely to remember you this way and will maybe even tell someone else about you. {We stopped at this one on such and such a street, I think you'd really like the ______ (fill in the blank) that they had.} <br />
Plus I'm still convinced that some of them were the super-secret-spy neighbor type. You never know who's strictly there to size you up.<br />
<br />
10.You will be busy for the duration of your sale. Whether it's a one day sale or a weekend long event, you will be devoting nine hours a day to this thing, plan accordingly. I am not good at math so between my night shift, a wedding, and the garage sale I got two hours of sleep one night. After my unfulfilling night of sleep I sat outside at the garage sale for almost ten hours (set up, sale itself, and take down) then worked a twelve hour shift. I am not embellishing this when I say that towards the end of my shift that night I was seeing things. A face in a picture looked at me (yes I know very Stephen King's IT) and bugs were flying all around me (just beyond my periph of course.) <br />
<br />
<br />
I could definitely get used to this list business.shabbycottagegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13685652523879010920noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8159810093323068594.post-14011609235498335122010-05-27T05:42:00.000-05:002010-05-27T05:42:07.928-05:00Men and BallsI thought since this blog's description includes something about dogs with smushed-in faces, I'd better write a little something on that...<br />
<br />
Our Frenchie (French Bulldog), let's call him Merle, is supposed to be nuetered this morning. Our pup is almost eight months old. Modern vetrinary medicine has allowed for ball snippage to be done at a much younger age these days. Usually six months is what most pup-parents aim for. <br />
<br />
Not my fiance. First and foremost I should tell you that he his the king of procrastination. No I do not exaggerate. <em>The KING. </em>He's the guy you see in the store on Valentine's Day frantically ripping through the slim-to-none selection that's left of the cards. Or the one standing in the fifty person line on Christmas Eve, arms full of presents. So I attribute much of this neutur delay to that.<br />
<br />
The rest I would attribute to that weird sense of ball pride that most men seem to possess. Be it theirs or their dog's. A couple of months ago we were talking finances and dreading the financial hit we were going to take for this expensive (but necessary!) surgery. I can tell when he's about to tell a joke, story, or any other profound piece of wordy mess because he starts licking his lips really fast. This is what he did right before he said, "Why do we have to get him nuetured at all?" (With, I kid you not, a huge mischevious I'm-a-little-boy-about-to-get-away-with-something smile plastered all over his face.) I gave him one of the infamous female "looks".<br />
<br />
To this brilliant idea I patiently explained to him the benefits of lobbing off a few pieces of his puppy's precious manhood. Like say... If we get him nuetured we won't have to worry about him turning into Sir Humpsalot whenever guests are over, or stealing the innocence of any of our stuffed animals, pillows, other pets, etc., and most importantly we won't have to worry about any Merle Jrs running around.<br />
<br />
He hung his head in defeat. But since then he has been constantly pointing out (with WAY more excitement than is actually warranted) how big Merle's balls are getting. Or how hairy. I don't get you guys. We don't point out other animals' boob areas: Did you see the udders on that cow!?<br />
<br />
And what is with those rubber ball thingys you can buy to put on the back of your car or to hang under the trailer hitch of your truck? It's balls. I mean really. shabbycottagegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13685652523879010920noreply@blogger.com1
